You’ll have the opportunity to network with other volunteer managers as well as reflect and plan what you’ll do next. \nAt this half-day event you will: \n\nHear from organisations who promote remote and virtual volunteering opportunities\nLearn tips for engaging volunteers remotely and maintaining connection\nHear about the benefits of including remote volunteering in your volunteering programme\nLearn how to support the wellbeing needs of remote volunteers\, in a hybrid model\nHear from an organisation who has had to adapt from traditional volunteering roles to managing virtually and the changes they have had to make\n\nAbout our speakers\nLindsay Marston\, Volunteer Manager\, Chester Zoo \nLindsay is the Volunteer Manager at Chester Zoo\, working alongside a Volunteer Officer and the conservation education and engagement team.  Together they offer a high-quality volunteering experience\, connecting volunteers with wildlife\, conservation and Chester Zoo. Through volunteering\, individuals can act as ambassadors for wildlife and support visitors to consider how they could live more sustainably or take action to protect wildlife. Chester Zoo has recently been awarded a Green Recovery Fund grant to help create a new 10-mile nature corridor in Chester; Lindsay will support a new volunteer coordinator to enable people to support this project through community volunteering. \nLucy Owens\, Volunteer Manager\, Catalyst Stockton\nLucy joined Catalyst in September 2020 managing a team of volunteers providing COVID support through the town’s community hub. Since then\, she developed and launched a new volunteering strategy for Stockton on Tees\, in close partnership with Stockton Borough Council and managed the development of a new volunteering team at Catalyst. Her role now focuses on the strategic development of volunteering across Stockton on Tees and supporting charities and organisations in their work with volunteers. Lucy has experience working for several national charities\, including Girlguiding\, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award\, Family Lives and the National Trust.  \nHer master’s research examined the impact parkrun events have on the communities in which they’re held\, including the motivations of and benefits to the volunteers who make them possible. As a volunteer running coach and regular events volunteer\, Lucy has an insight into the volunteer experience from both sides.   \nAndrew Berrie\, Mental Health At Work – National Lead\, Mind\nAndrew supports the ambitions of the Thriving at Work Leadership Council in driving employer action across the UK and oversees delivery of the Mental Health at Work website and Mental Health at Work Commitment. The Mental Health at Work Commitment is a simple framework for organisations to improve and support the mental health of their people. It builds on what we know: based on the Thriving at Work standards\, pulling from the pledges and standards that are already out there\, using up-to-date research\, from UK employers and mental health experts. How does it build trust and wellbeing? \nLord O’Donnell\, former Cabinet Secretary\, will introduce and outline the new research to be discussed.  \nResearch Project One:  The ABC of BAME \nThis is new mixed method research carried out by Jump\, Breakthrough Media\, Leeds Beckett University and sponsored by Sport England\, the National Trust\, Cancer Research UK and BT.  \nThe work is the result of exhaustive analysis of the UK data sets on volunteering (Understanding Society\, Taking Part\, Community Life) and qualitative research into the groups least likely to volunteer.  \nThe research shows\, for the first time\, differences in the B\, A and ME of volunteering and the importance of intersectionality in work on diversity\, particularly consideration of lower socio-economic status.  \nThe research offers new insights into levels of volunteering\, motivations for volunteering and the impact of volunteering for different groups. \nResearch Project Two:  Leadership and current volunteers – the missing pieces in the EDI jigsaw\nMost work on diversity in volunteering focuses on how to attract new\, more diverse volunteers.  \nDrawing on research among 12 national charities and carried out by Dr Helen Timbrell\, this work instead offers insights into the extent to which current volunteers can be perceived as enablers or barriers of achieving greater diversity. His post was then split into three positions: he was succeeded as Cabinet Secretary by Sir Jeremy Heywood\, as Head of the Home Civil Service by Sir Bob Kerslake (in a part-time role)\, and as Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office by Ian Watmore. Whilst Cabinet Secretary\, O’Donnell was regularly referred to within the Civil Service\, and subsequently in the popular press\, as GOD; this was mainly because of his initials. In 2012\, O’Donnell joined Frontier Economics as a Senior Advisor \nNatasha Broomfield-Reid\n											\n															 \nNatasha is the founder and Director of Diverse Matters. She is responsible for the overall running of the company and for the design and delivery of a range of diversity and inclusion solutions for organisations within all sectors. \nNatasha has over 20 years’ experience of working within the diversity and inclusion field\, and prior to setting up Diverse Matters and was the Head of Equality\, Diversity and Inclusion for Victim Support. Natasha led the organisation to become a Stonewall top 100 employer\, achieve the ‘Leaders in Diversity’ accreditation from the National Centre for Diversity and be a Top 50 Inclusive employer. \nNatasha has continued to carry out a consultant role for Victim Support. Within this role she supported the organisation to remain the top charity in the Stonewall top 100 2017/2018 Workplace Equality Index\, Top Trans Inclusive organisation and Star Performing Organisation\, become the top charity in the National Centre for Diversity’s Top 100 diverse organisations (2017)\, win the Business Disability Standard ‘Know How’ award for their support to victims with mental health issues as well as being a top 50 Inclusive Employer during 2016 and 2017 awarded by the Excellence in Diversity. Victim Support has also been shortlisted for Pink News Equality Award (2018) and Natasha was the winner of Stonewall Cymru’s Ally of the year award (2018). \nNatasha also worked as the Head of Development for Equal Approach. Equal Approach is a leading inclusive recruiter\, diversity consultancy and training provider\, supporting organisations to attract\, recruit\, recognise\, retain and promote diverse talent\, and make workplaces more inclusive. Natasha worked with organisations from a wide range of sectors including finance\, recruitment\, design\, retail\, legal and the public sector to support them to become more inclusive in their practices. This included a wide range of services including audits\, training\, policy and strategy development. \nNatasha currently carries out Associate roles for Business Disability Forum (BDF)\, National Centre for Diversity (NCD) and Irish Centre for Diversity (ICD) as a Diversity Advisor and Righttrack learning consultancy as a Diversity consultant/trainer. Board roles include the Institute of Equality and Diversity Practitioners (IEDP) and Advisory board for Supporting Justice. \nDr Helen Timbrell\n											\n															 \nDr Helen Timbrell – People and Organisational Development Consultant. \nHelen works with organisations to create the conditions for staff and volunteers to do their best work\, helping them to make a positive difference to organisations\, communities and the lives of individuals. \nHelen spent eleven years working at the National Trust\, where as Director of Volunteering and Participation she appointed the organisation’s first Head of Diversity and Inclusion. As Executive Director of People and Organisational Development at Samaritans she was responsible for human resources\, learning and development and volunteering. Helen has previously worked in Students’ Unions and with Citizens Advice and is now an independent consultant. \nHelen’s PhD explored geographical variations in volunteering. She has an MBA\, is a chartered member of the CIPD and is currently developing her own practice as a Coach by studying for an MSc in Coaching and Behavioural Change. \nAs a volunteer Helen has previously been a Director of the Association of Volunteer Managers and a Trustee of Girlguiding UK. She is currently a parkrun Event Director. \nBackground\n											\n															 \nJump have expert understanding of UK Government open source datasets. Since 2016 Jump has performed advanced statistical analysis of the data on volunteering to understand the motivations and barriers to volunteering in the UK. \nJump Projects are authors (alongside Simetrica and Sport and Recreation Alliance) of the 2018 report ‘GIVERS’ which introduces a behavioural model for all volunteers. Qualitative research has sought to understand how this is established in childhood\, but little empirical evidence exists to explain when and how the engagement gap emerges.\n\n\nThis research draws on data gathered in the first four waves (2014-2017) of the National Youth Social Action Survey (NYSAS). DESCRIPTION:Building bridges\nThe aim of the workshop is to bring together volunteer managers and researchers to strengthen collaborative working. DESCRIPTION:GDPR & IG -What will be the impact and are we ready for it? \n23 January 2018 at Hanbury Hall\, Spitalfields\, Hanbury St | Spitalfields | London \nThis event is designed as both a spot-check for your preparations -have you got it all covered? and a look at recent relevant experiences that we can all learn from. \nEveryone anticipates significant changes when the new GDPR regulations come into effect\, but how will it specifically impact on volunteering and volunteer managers\, as opposed to fundraisers? Has every organisation taken the same approach and made the same preparations? do we all recognise the same potential issues\, and does anyone really understand the full connotations and consequences. \nRNLI took the brave decision to implement the GDPR regulations a year early\, and are the only large organisation to have done so. Find out what they learnt\, why they opted for thi unconventional route and what advice they’d suggest for others. \nAlzheimer’s Society have specific experience of broader data protection issues\, and will be sharing their Enforcement Notice experience and the key work they took forward as a result of this. DESCRIPTION:The Goverment’s recent Community Life Survey appears to suggest a fall in general levels of volunteering. But is it as simple as that? Has the recent change in research methodology affected the results? If so\, how? What are the pros and cons of the new method\, how does the private sector approach such research\, and how is the data utilised? \nThis event will bring together the Survey’s lead researcher\, Olivia Christophersen\, with Cian Murphy\, Head of data Science at nfpSynergy\, and Veronique Jochum\, Head of Research at NCVO. Latest results from the Community Life Survey \nThe Community Life Survey is the Government’s main source of information on patterns in volunteering in England. This presentation will summarise the latest results from the survey\, exploring the characteristics of people who volunteer and how this has changed over time. It will also look at the frequency of different types of volunteering activities. \n14:15 Cian Murphy\, Head of data Science\, nfpSynergy: Is counting volunteers easier than counting sheep? \nnfpSynergy has been monitoring the percentage of people who volunteer for over 15 years. This session will present some of our trends and analysis. It will also look at some of the challenges of deciding what is and isn’t volunteering\, and work out why the different researchers come up with such different estimates.
