SUMMARY:Forging connections: strengthening volunteer management's impact -- June 19\, Bristol
DESCRIPTION:How can we reduce the barriers to a wider range of people engaging with our volunteering?\nWhere can I find an innovative way to demonstrate volunteering’s impact and value?\nHow can we encourage\, enable and support people to step forward for their community?\nWhich different approaches can I use to effectively communicate with large teams or remote volunteers and colleagues?\n\n\nAVM is delighted to return to Bristol for a second year with four leaders of volunteering who are driving forward the volunteer management profession. Together with you\, they’ll tackle three important\, vast and interconnected challenges… \nThose who could most benefit from volunteering are the same people who are significantly less likely to volunteer. Does a community engagement approach to volunteering reduce the barriers to volunteering that people with less education\, income and life chances face? \nWhen making recommendations or putting together a case for support you need supporting evidence – otherwise you’re just expressing an opinion. Volunteers are often our greatest advocates: are we missing out on a key opportunity by not involving them in building and demonstrating impact? \nThe true test of whether we’ve moved people or changed something\, is if it continues to move or change without us. Does influential marketing and communications hold the key for volunteer managers to increase buy-in\, recruitment\, retention and help manage change? \nJoin us at the premier event for volunteer managers in the South West to connect with learning\, colleagues and good practice to strengthen the impact of your work. \n–Scroll past the programme to secure your ticket–\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n10.00am\nArrivals\, networking\, coffee and tea\n\n\n\n10.30am\nWelcome from our hosts\nAndrew Hancock\, Head of Volunteering\, SS Great Britain\n\n\n10.35am\nIntroductions and icebreaker\nDaniel Ingram\, AVM\n\n\n10.55am\n[expand title=”Is community engagement the answer to volunteering’s diversity and recruitment challenges? In this interactive session Stephen will help you explore the boundaries between volunteering and community engagement. He’ll enable you to: \n\nQuestion the rules we place on volunteering and weigh up their pros and cons\nExplore ways you could widen your impact by taking a different approach to volunteering\nEvaluate the risks and how we can minimise them\nConsider the role of the modern leader of volunteering\, and the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead\n[/expand]\nStephen Dale\, Head of Community Partnerships\, Dorothy House Hospice Care\n\n\n11.45am\n[expand title=”Flexible benefits – growing a small charity’s volunteering through marketing a new approach (click to learn more)“]\n \nHear how Sofia launched a new volunteering initiative using a digital platform and the strategic approach of Volunteer Makers. She’ll share how effectively marketing the new approach led to increased buy-in\, recruitment\, retention and helped manage change. Sofia’s session aims: \n\nTo share how to get heard as a smaller charity and the importance of marketing and communications to volunteer engagement.\nTo demonstrate how thinking about volunteering in its broadest sense\, across an organisation\, offers opportunities to engage more supporters and from a more diverse background.\n\n[/expand]\nSofia Carosi\, Corporate\, Community and Events Fundraiser\, HorseWorld\n\n12.15pm\nLunch [1 hr 5 m] – provided for you\n\n\n\n12.45pm\nFree guided tour of the SS Great Britain – optional\nVolunteer Tour Guides\, SS Great Britain\n\n\n1.20pm\n[expand title=”Most Significant Change – using stories to demonstrate your impact (click to learn more)“]\n\n‘In my work\, I’d been reporting for 5 years on criteria set by Macmillan’s head office. I wanted to better demonstrate the reality of the amazing work our volunteers do when sat down face to face with someone affected by cancer. \n‘This session will share my experience of using a qualitative\, participatory process for measuring impact\, called the Most Significant Change technique. This uses stories of impact and brings together a range of different stakeholders with varying perspectives to decide collectively on which stories best demonstrate significant change.’ \nWhat worked and didn’t? How did he adapt the methodology to suit their time frame and organisation? How did he use the findings to influence change? Piers will answer these questions and enable you to: \n\nConsider who the main stakeholders are in your work and who you want to influence.\nBegin developing a plan for using the Most Significant Change technique in your work.\n\n[/expand]\nPiers Cardiff\, Volunteering Services Manager\, Macmillan Cancer Support\n\n\n2.10pm\nGroup activity\, networking\, coffee and tea\n\n\n\n2.35pm\n[expand title=”Now we’re talking – transforming digital volunteering communications (click to learn more)“]\n\nJo will share how creating a clear communication strategy helped get buy in from colleagues to her plans and the key tools she’s developed to effectively communicate with a large remote team of volunteers. SUMMARY:Risk factor: flexible volunteering and risk management -- May 21\, London
DESCRIPTION:Seeking to make volunteering more flexible while maintaining a high standard of risk management? \nLooking for a way to manage risk more efficiently and effectively? \nKeen to influence a culture change from risk avoidance to active risk management?\nWant to work more productively with your health and safety colleagues? \n\n\nWe know that formal processes\, such as paperwork and compliance training\, can demotivate volunteers and restrict what leaders of volunteering can achieve. But the need to manage risks effectively within the third sector has never had a higher profile. \nThe total costs of workplace self-reported injuries and ill health to organisations in 2016/17 was £3 billion. Whilst one in five volunteers feel their volunteering is becoming ‘too much like paid work’\, with inflexibility and unreasonable expectations being key factors. \nIs it possible to meet our duty of care at the same time as fully meeting the needs of our volunteers and our organisation? \nThis event features two volunteering leaders who have found a way to strike that balance. They will discuss how they worked with their stakeholders to ensure their projects are successfully and safely delivered for all involved. You have the opportunity to connect\, learn and share with them and other volunteer managers at this brand new event. \n–Scroll past the programme to secure your ticket–\nProgramme\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n1.00pm\nArrivals\, networking\, coffee and tea (lunch not provided)\n\n\n\n1.30pm\nWelcome\, introductions and icebreaker\nDaniel Ingram\, AVM\n\n\n1.45pm\n[expand title=”Risky Business – Flexible volunteering in archaeology (click to learn more)“] \n \nHelen will discuss how she’s established a successful flexible volunteering model within a context of managing the technical requirements and risks that archaeological fieldwork can dig up. SUMMARY:Walk this way: diversity in volunteering - London
DESCRIPTION:Diversity in volunteering: myths and misunderstanding\n \n \n \nWhy most of what we think is wrong and what leaders need to do about it \nThis event\, aimed specifically at chief executives and heads of volunteering\, shares the results of two recent research projects exploring different aspects of diversity in volunteering. Our aim is to present an open\, energetic and engaging forum for an exchange of relevant information and views. \nLed by an expert in equality\, diversity and inclusion the day is an opportunity to explore the implications of the research in your own organisation\, focussing on the role of leaders as well as operational practice. The research offers actionable insights for organisations and the volunteering sector and the day will focus on shifting from talking to walking. \nSetting the scene\nWhat is the value of volunteering to inclusion\, diversity and equality? How does it build trust and wellbeing? \nLord O’Donnell\, former Cabinet Secretary\, will introduce and outline the new research to be discussed.  \nResearch Project One: The ABC of BAME \nThis is new mixed method research carried out by Jump\, Breakthrough Media\, Leeds Beckett University and sponsored by Sport England\, the National Trust\, Cancer Research UK and BT.  \nThe work is the result of exhaustive analysis of the UK data sets on volunteering (Understanding Society\, Taking Part\, Community Life) and qualitative research into the groups least likely to volunteer.  \nThe research shows\, for the first time\, differences in the B\, A and ME of volunteering and the importance of intersectionality in work on diversity\, particularly consideration of lower socio-economic status.  \nThe research offers new insights into levels of volunteering\, motivations for volunteering and the impact of volunteering for different groups. \nResearch Project Two: Leadership and current volunteers – the missing pieces in the EDI jigsaw\nMost work on diversity in volunteering focuses on how to attract new\, more diverse volunteers.  \nDrawing on research among 12 national charities and carried out by Dr Helen Timbrell\, this work instead offers insights into the extent to which current volunteers can be perceived as enablers or barriers of achieving greater diversity. It also reveals the lack of confidence in Executive Teams and Trustees to effectively lead for equality\, diversity and inclusion.    \nSharing good practice\nHear about practical case studies from our event partners. They’ll be showcasing examples of good practice in engaging diverse volunteers\, using the pecha kucha methodology.     \nWalking the talk\nReflecting on the research and good practice examples what are the implications for individuals and organisations?  What\, if any\, additional research is needed?   \nDelegates will work together to develop personal and organisational action plans. \nLocation of event\nVenue \nConway Hall \n25 Red Lion Square \nLondon  WC1R 4RL \nGetting there \n \nTwitter\nPlease use the hashtag #AVMDiversity to involve others in this event \nSponsored by\n \n \n \n \n \n \nSpeakers\nLord O’Donnell\n \n \nGus O’Donnell is a former British senior civil servant and economist\, who between 2005 and 2011 (under three Prime Ministers) served as the Cabinet Secretary\, the highest official in the British Civil Service. \nO’Donnell announced after the 2010 General Election that he would step down within that Parliament and did so at the end of 2011. His post was then split into three positions: he was succeeded as Cabinet Secretary by Sir Jeremy Heywood\, as Head of the Home Civil Service by Sir Bob Kerslake (in a part-time role)\, and as Permanent Secretary in the Cabinet Office by Ian Watmore. Whilst Cabinet Secretary\, O’Donnell was regularly referred to within the Civil Service\, and subsequently in the popular press\, as GOD; this was mainly because of his initials. Exploring the relationship between socio-economic advantage and volunteering during adolescence\nEddy Hogg\, University of Kent\n\n\n\nThere is a stable relationship between social class and engagement in volunteering among adults in the UK and elsewhere. Qualitative research has sought to understand how this is established in childhood\, but little empirical evidence exists to explain when and how the engagement gap emerges.\n\n\nThis research draws on data gathered in the first four waves (2014-2017) of the National Youth Social Action Survey (NYSAS). The conclusion is that there is an observable relationship between socio-economic advantage and volunteering by young people\, but that it is not straightforward.\n\n\nEddy will draw on the findings to make recommendations about how organisations can best attract young volunteers from a wide range of social backgrounds.\n\n\n\n2.20pm\nThe value and impact of volunteering for people with criminal convictions\nAndrina Dawson\, Giving Time Project Coordinator\n\n\n\nA workshop presenting the key theories relating to the engagement of people with criminal convictions in volunteering.  Outlining the impact that results from meaningful engagement and participation. \n\nEngaging with service users using the Desistance Model\nLinking the good Lives Model to volunteering\n\nThe impact that results from positive engagement\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n2.55pm\nRoundtable discussions\n\n\n\n3.25pm\nQ&A session\nPanel of speakers from today’s event\n\n\n4.05pm\nClosing address\n\n\n\n \n\n4.15pm\nFinish\nPlease join us to network and relax\n\n\n\nVenue\nSpitalfields VenueChrist Church\,Commercial Street\,London E1 6LY

SUMMARY:New Approaches to Involving & Engaging Volunteers (AVM Replay)
DESCRIPTION:Do you need to kick start the cultural change within your organisation?\nAre you keen to engage new types of volunteers to reflect the changing role and image of your organisation?\nCan we encourage volunteering as a general activity\, rather than a specific role within a single organisation?\n\nThis Learning and Development day will be looking at innovative programmes to involve and engage a new generation of volunteers. Examining the volunteer journey from assessing the organisations’ needs\, recruiting suitable volunteers\, training\, engaging and supporting volunteers and integrating new recruits into the existing programme. \nIt will also address the vital role of research in the strategic thinking of volunteer organisations and how to use data effectively in presenting the role of volunteers to stakeholders. \nWe will also consider ways to encourage organisations to embrace volunteering as a dynamic resource\, rather than a “cheap alternative to staff” We will look at bringing senior directors along on the journey of volunteer development and progression. \nThere will be roundtable discussions and networking sessions to allow all attendees to share their own experiences and an opportunity to take a guided tour of the incredible SS. Great Britain. \nAVM wishes to thank the South West Museum Development Programme\, English Heritage and the SS. SUMMARY:GDPR & IG - What will be the impact and are we ready for it?
DESCRIPTION:GDPR & IG -What will be the impact and are we ready for it? \n23 January 2018 at Hanbury Hall\, Spitalfields\, Hanbury St | Spitalfields | London \nThis event is designed as both a spot-check for your preparations -have you got it all covered? and a look at recent relevant experiences that we can all learn from. \nEveryone anticipates significant changes when the new GDPR regulations come into effect\, but how will it specifically impact on volunteering and volunteer managers\, as opposed to fundraisers? Has every organisation taken the same approach and made the same preparations? do we all recognise the same potential issues\, and does anyone really understand the full connotations and consequences. \nRNLI took the brave decision to implement the GDPR regulations a year early\, and are the only large organisation to have done so. Find out what they learnt\, why they opted for thi unconventional route and what advice they’d suggest for others. \nAlzheimer’s Society have specific experience of broader data protection issues\, and will be sharing their Enforcement Notice experience and the key work they took forward as a result of this. The ICO were sadly unable to send a speaker to this event\, however this presentation will address the ICO’s role in Alzheimer’s situation. \nPaul Jennings\, legal expert from Bates Wells Braithwaite (BWB) will be providing an overview of the legal implications of the new legislation\, with suggestions of some of the pitfalls to avoid and an idea of the possible consequences for both large and small organisations. \nAGENDA:(subject to change) \n1pm Arrivals\, registration \n1:30 Welcome address from Daniel Ingram\, AVM Director \n1:35 RNLI: Tom Payne\, Data Governance Analyst and Esme Chapman\, Data Governance Analyst. \nTom and Esme will be covering RNLI’s approach to GDPR readiness: what was the background to their decision to implement a year early; what factors seemed most relevant to them\, and did the results match their expectations? They will share what they learned\, and suggest how others may beneft from their experience. They will also address Accountability and Ownership at RNLI and the communication roll-out to staff and volunteers. \n2:15 Alzheimers Society: Kate Adams\, Head of Volunteering and Amy Symons\, Volunteering Support Manager. \nKate and Amy will give us an overview of the situation leading to the Information Commisioner taking action against Alzheimers for their “disappointing attitude’ to data use. They will address the impact of this decision\, what actions Alzheimers took\, what they learned and how\, as an organisation\, they were able to channel the experience into positive development and become better prepared for GDPR requirements. \n2:55 Table discussions \n3:25 Coffee and tea \n3:45 Paul Jennings\, Partner\, BWB \nPaul will be guiding us through the legal minefield of what’s allowed\, what isn’t; what is clear and what is open to interpretation\, and ultimately what can be expected from disagreement or transgression. He will provide a legal interpretation of the governments aims\, wishes and intentions. \n4:20 Round-up and closing address. \n4:30 Optional Q&A session: For those with specific questions for our speakers\, this timeslot is available for on-on-one or small group discussions. \n5 pm Close

SUMMARY:Community Life Survey: What is volunteering and how should it be counted?
DESCRIPTION:The Goverment’s recent Community Life Survey appears to suggest a fall in general levels of volunteering. But is it as simple as that? Has the recent change in research methodology affected the results? If so\, how? What are the pros and cons of the new method\, how does the private sector approach such research\, and how is the data utilised? \nThis event will bring together the Survey’s lead researcher\, Olivia Christophersen\, with Cian Murphy\, Head of data Science at nfpSynergy\, and Veronique Jochum\, Head of Research at NCVO. Between them they will look at the different ways in which volunteering data is collected\, examine the trends and consider how it can best be utilised for the benefit of the sector. \nAs usual\, there will be opportunities for networking and roundtable discussions where attendees can compare their own experiences\, observations and conclusions. \nAGENDA \n13:00 Registration \n13:30 Welcome address from Ruth Leonard\, AVM Chair \n13:40 Olivia Christophersen\, Head of Statistics\, the Department for Digital\, Culture\, Media and Sport: Who volunteers? Latest results from the Community Life Survey \nThe Community Life Survey is the Government’s main source of information on patterns in volunteering in England. This presentation will summarise the latest results from the survey\, exploring the characteristics of people who volunteer and how this has changed over time. It will also look at the frequency of different types of volunteering activities. \n14:15 Cian Murphy\, Head of data Science\, nfpSynergy: Is counting volunteers easier than counting sheep? \nnfpSynergy has been monitoring the percentage of people who volunteer for over 15 years. This session will present some of our trends and analysis. It will also look at some of the challenges of deciding what is and isn’t volunteering\, and work out why the different researchers come up with such different estimates. One thing’s for sure\, while it’s probably easier to count sheep\, but sheep would be rubbish running a charity shop. \n14:50 Roundtable discussion \n15:20 Coffee break \n15:45 Veronique Jochum\, Head of Research\, NCVO: \nVéronique will talk about the way the NCVO uses the Community Life Survey to improve understanding of how people get involved. She will outline how the survey informs the yearly production of the UK Civil Society Almanac and the Road Ahead publication on the sector’s operating environment\, and how the survey results feature in a new NCVO publication ‘Getting involved: How people make a difference’ drawing together trends\, facts and statistics relating to participation from a range of different sources. \n16:20 Closing address \n16:45 End

SUMMARY:Winning in Volunteer Management: Working together\, what can we achieve? (AVM Replay)
DESCRIPTION:Volunteering and Sport have the power to change lives\, but do all Volunteer Managers Face the Same Issues? \nVolunteers in sport make up the highest percentage in the UK (22%)\, and volunteer management is a focus for many sporting organisations looking to expand the capacity of their sport. With the spotlight on volunteering brought about through the Gamesmakers of the London 2012 Olympic Games\, what lessons have been learned about effectively engaging volunteers in sports organisations? \nVolunteer Managers at Sports organisations address certain issues that are unique to the sports sector. However\, they also face many issues that are universal. What can the sports sector learn from the charity sector about how to manage volunteers well? \nThis event aims to bring together presenters and delegates from sports and non-sports volunteer organisations\, to see how sharing experiences\, challenges and successes can be of mutual benefit to all. \nSeveral of our speakers will be sharing their personal experiences of both sports and non-sports volunteering and volunteer management. \nWatch again with AVM Replay\nAVM members can log in to access the recordings from this and other events. SUMMARY:Meaningful Engagement Begins with Recruitment (AVM Replay)
DESCRIPTION:The intention here is to examine how organisations approach the recruitment process\, with a view to considering the long-term objectives. Does “meaningful” mean volunteers who will remain in your organisation for a long time\, or does it mean bringing in people who will enjoy rewarding volunteering throughout the sector? Should organisations take a broader perspective\, or are we necessarily driven by less altruistic motives? \nWith a cross-section of smaller and larger organisations represented\, we aim to address some of the key issues that affect all organisations looking to recruit volunteers. There will be open space discussions for attendees to share their own particular challenges and successes. \nWatch again with AVM Replay\nAVM members can log in to access the recordings from this and other events.
