Passion, Purpose, Participation – advancing volunteering together

HVOS members: Please note that for our 2019 conference, you are considered to be a member of HVOS if you have subscribed to the HVOS newsletter and/ or have attended one of our previous conferences. In 2020, only people who have subscribed to the HVOS newsletter will be eligible for the members’ rate at the conference.

We are thrilled to be hosting our second conference in Scotland, in partnership with Heritage Volunteering Scotland (HVOS).

Together, we will bring you a day full of learning focused on increasing participation in volunteering, whatever your sector.

  • 1) A Relationship-Based Approach – Promoting Inclusion at Shelter Scotland - Sarah Latto, Volunteer Development Manager, Anthea Reid and Vajeeha Saleem, Volunteer Support Officers, Shelter Scotland (click to learn more)

    The Volunteering Team at Shelter Scotland, headed by Sarah Latto, have discovered that personal relationships with volunteers should be at the centre of all decision-making in order to promote inclusion. This realisation has transformed the way that they involve volunteers and provided a lens for critically assessing all of their processes.

    In this workshop they will share their relationship-based approach to volunteer involvement, and what this means in practice for volunteer recruitment, selection and induction. They will then invite workshop participants to apply this approach to their own processes, before hosting a wider discussion on how this can be applied in different settings.
  • 2) Engaging family and under 18s volunteering - Fiona Cariss, Volunteer Manager, the Whitworth (click to learn more)

    Having a family is often a barrier for people who want to volunteer, in this workshop you’ll learn how the Whitworth opened up their Early Years and Family programme in order to provide more flexible opportunities for local families to volunteer together.

    Hear from Fiona about how the Whitworth team have addressed the challenges and the opportunities of involving families with babies as young as 12 weeks and children volunteering in their teens, and how they created flexible and accommodating opportunities that are engaging for all involved, and how this has also helped the Gallery engage a more varied age of visitor.
  • 3) Advocating for Success -Tamsin Russell, Professional Development Officer, Museums Association/ Heritage Volunteer Group Steering Group Member (click to learn more)

    This interactive workshop looks at how we can more effectively advocate for volunteering within our organisations and sectors.
    Grounded in a recent example from Heritage Volunteer Group as they embarked on their first UK-wide survey of volunteers within the heritage sector, we will explore the process to develop an advocacy plan and survey, how to use metrics and storytelling to influence and inspire; and learn from our experience about how to do it better.
    During the time together we will undertake a stakeholder analysis, identify allies, map influencing touch points to meet your advocacy objective.
  • 4) Introducing the OPIT Volunteer Participation Campaign 2019-2024 - Dr Jeff Sanders, Project Manager, DigIt! and Cara Jones, Project Manager, Archaeology Scotland (click to learn more)

    This session will encourage you to think differently about your role as a supporter and motivator of volunteers. How do we engage and empower volunteers who we may never meet face to face? Alan will share his experiences and, in addition to your own contributions, give you the confidence to try something different in building relationships with remote volunteers.

    Please come with your questions and curiosity as together we will explore this topic further.
