Meaningful Engagement Begins With Recruitment.

This event is scheduled to be the first in a two-part assessment of Volunteer Recruitment and Retention.
The intention here is to examine how organisations approach the recruitment process, with a view to considering the long-term objectives. Does “meaningful” mean volunteers who will remain in your organisation for a long time, or does it mean bringing in people who will enjoy rewarding volunteering throughout the sector? Should organisations take a broader perspective, or are we necessarily driven by less altruistic motives?
With a cross-section of smaller and larger organisations represented, we aim to address some of the key issues that affect all organisations looking to recruit volunteers. There will be open space discussions for attendees to share their own particular challenges and successes.

Cancer Research is the world’s largest independent cancer research charity, with a broad range of activities to raise awareness and funds in support of their research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Join In is an award-winning London 2012 volunteering legacy charity, and Jump Projects combines creative behaviour change and social impact analysis to encourage volunteering and physical activity.
Flora and Will will present how to understand the value of your volunteers in order to make the case for more focus and investment. We will also reveal the ability of a new GIVERS survey to help you understand your volunteers and their recruitment and retention needs.
11:20Daniel Ingram, Wood Green, The Animals Charity.
From humble beginnings in 1924 Wood Green, The Animals Charity has grown to become one of the leading animal welfare organisations in the UK, taking in animals of all shapes and sizes.They offer help and support to both people and their pets. Daniel will consider how to most effectively allocate time between recruitment and retention practices, with the presentation: Recruitment versus retention – where do I spend my time?

1:30Hazel Finney, Community Impact Bucks.
Community Impact Bucks is the Volunteer Centre for Buckinghamshire, supporting around 2,500 registered charities and community groups, and around 1,000 unregistered. Many of these are small organisations, some with no paid staff, but all requiring a proper recruitment and induction process for their volunteers. Hazel runs monthly advice surgeries on volunteer recruitment and retention, and also a one day Attracting and Keeping Volunteers’ masterclass. She will present on: How an organisation can get itself prepared to take on volunteers for the first time, and /or refresh its approach.
2:05 Stephen Hill, Parkinson’s UK.
Their award-winning rebrand in 2010 saw the change to Parkinson’s UK and a new sense of being a movement of people affected by Parkinson’s. Their local groups now support 30,000 people and they have a UK-wide network of Parkinson’s local advisers. As Head of Volunteering, Stephen is responsible for the volunteer componenet of that support network. Currently in the early preparation stages of a major recruitment campaign, his presentation considers a novel approach to preparing the organisation for volunteers. Colleagues throughout the organisation have a vital role in preparing for the impact and presence of volunteers. Effective recruitment preparation isn’t just about looking out to reach new people, it is also about looking in.
