AVM is an independent membership body that supports, represents, and champions people in volunteer management in the UK regardless of field, discipline, or sector.
Our Directors are responsible for:
- setting the overall policy and strategic direction for AVM
- leading specific areas to develop and grow the organisation
- ensuring AVM is run in a legal and effective way
Our current directors come from all sections of our membership and bring a huge range of transferable skills and experience. Any AVM Member is welcome to put themselves forward for the board. We’re especially interested to hear from people who bring a diversity of thought and experience to our board and are particularly keen to hear from people with digital, media, public relations, marketing, and business development skills.
We are committed to diversity and equality of opportunity in all aspects of our work and activities including membership of our Board. We would love to hear from AVM members interested in joining our Board from under-represented groups such as returning parents or carers who are re-entering work after a career break, people who are LGBTQ+, from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds, with a disability, impairment, learning difference or long-term condition, those with caring responsibilities, from different nations and regions, and from less advantaged socio-economic backgrounds.
What does being a director involve?
Ideally you will have direct experience in one of the above areas. If you are keen to develop the skills, knowledge, and experience in those areas, we can help you to do that too.
Director terms are initially four years. Our current directors currently volunteer around 10 hours per month, which includes attendance at our six board meetings (3 hours in duration) and two away days per year.

To put yourself forward for this role, you must be an AVM member. You must also not be barred from being a company director or charity trustee. You will then need to complete a short application form that includes a statement on why you should be a director.

What happens next?
We’ll check over your information to make sure you’re eligible to be an AVM Director. If we’re not sure, we’ll be in touch.
If we receive more nominations than we have places for, we will then hold an online election where AVM members will be able to vote for their preferred nominees. This will be in the run up to our Annual General Meeting, being held in December 2024.
