Volunteer Managers have told us that Lead Volunteers is a priority for many in 2021, so we’ve brought together people in the sector who have experience of implementing a lead model and they will share their learnings during this event. You will also hear from the perspective of a lead volunteer.
At this event you will learn:
- How to develop a lead volunteer model
- How to involve volunteers in the planning process
- Some of the bumps you might encounter along the way
This is a half-day event, running from 9:30 am to 12:30pm, and will be on Zoom (read our Zoom tips for getting the best out of online events). There will be opportunities to ask our speakers questions, and discuss next steps in small groups.

About our speakers
Lucy Baines – London Youth Games
Lucy has worked at London Youth Games for 4 years and has overseen the volunteer’s programme throughout this time. London Youth Games aims to use the power of competitive sport to create life-changing opportunities for young Londoners, engaging all 33 borough communities with inclusive participation at all levels and for all abilities. They deliver over 90 competitions, across over 30 sports annually. London Youth Games runs a volunteering programme called GamesForce and as part of this they have both a Team Leader and Junior Team Leader programme. Team Leaders are over 18 years old and manage groups of volunteers on event days. Junior Team Leaders are aged between 16-18 and work alongside Team Leaders, helping to grow their leadership and communication skills. London Youth Games’ Team Leaders are crucial to the delivery of the Games.
Alan Bennett – Scouts
Alan joined The Scouts as an employee in 2013. For the first five years of his tenure he worked remotely as a Growth and Development Officer covering the North of England. It was in this role that Alan worked alongside new and existing lead volunteers and in partnership with local communities, supporting the growth of local Scouting. Since November 2018, Alan has been working on a funded project with the Department of Education to pilot Early Years Scouting for 4-5 year olds across England. This successful pilot led to the Board of Trustees unanimously approving Early Years Scouting, and Alan is now working on making this a reality for the organisation.
Outside of his role, Alan is an Assistant Scout Leader for 10-14 year olds and is incredibly passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of other people. In this session, Alan will share his experience of working within a lead volunteer model within a large charity. Over 160,000 volunteers help more than 460,000 young people each year to build Skills for Life at The Scouts. This is possible through the lead volunteer model they operate and Alan will share the pros’ and cons’ of this and top tips for charities of any size who may consider this approach.
Caroline Kendall – Canal & River Trust
Having worked in both the private and public sector, Caroline started in the charity sector at National Trust in 2011 and has been with Canal & River Trust for the last six years. Volunteering has become an integral part of Caroline’s everyday life – her role is to ensure volunteers’ have great experience from start to finish, with an emphasis on developing new opportunities and ways for volunteers to get involved in what is a relatively new charity.
Canal & River Trust have volunteers in many of their teams: from leading Towpath Taskforces, organising Greeters in Welcome Stations, through to co-ordinating departments in their Museums. Their lead volunteers support with planning, delivery and celebration of volunteer tasks, and bring a huge range of skills and experience to their role. Canal & River Trust are enormously proud of the dedication and commitment their lead volunteers give to the Trust, and Caroline hopes that through sharing her experience to date, she can inspire other organisations to offer a similar opportunity. This session will give you an overview of what the lead volunteer role entails, what has worked well, and offer tips for better practice.
Lucy Goodway – Edwards Trust
Lucy started at Edward’s Trust as the Volunteering and Engagement Coordinator in 2016, where the organisation had 5 key volunteers that needed re-engaging to stay inspired to support the cause. Five years on the number of volunteers has grown to 45 active members, known as ‘Friends of Edward’s Trust’ (FOET), and are now thriving in their own like-minded community. Lucy’s role grew and as a result of this, she is now the Engagement Manager at the bereavement Charity. This session will give delegates the incentive to motivate key volunteers to be passionate about the work in making a difference within a ‘starter-doer-stayer’ framework.
Lucy believes that a healthy body stimulates a healthy mind and can be found playing netball, taking on gruelling running challenges, as well as Mummy to three wonderful children, sadly one of which who is no longer with us; hence Lucy’s passion for making a difference to bereaved families across the West Midlands.

Terms and conditions of ticket sales
You can pay by credit card or request an invoice at the checkout.
Please familiarise yourselves with our cancellation policy, and payment terms below. We do require payment to be made before the event.
The agenda is correct at time of publication. AVM will contact you about any significant changes in advance of the event.
AVM will not accept liability for any ability to attend this event due to technical issues with a delegate’s equipment. If technical difficulties prevent AVM from hosting this event, we will endeavour to reschedule the conference to another date, and a full or partial refund will be offered if the new date is unsuitable.
Payment and cancellation terms
Payment must be made by the date of the event.
If you require an invoice, please ensure you book your place a minimum of two weeks before the start date of the event. After that we will only accept payment by credit card or PayPal.
Want to pay by credit card but can’t pay now? No problem! You can pay against an invoice by credit card (or PayPal): we will send you a link to do so.
As you follow the online booking process – select the payment option at checkout “Request invoice”. If you need us to add a payment reference or purchase order number to the invoice – just add it in the “Additional information” section when confirming your billing details at checkout.
You’ll receive your invoice by email once we have accepted your booking. You can pay for your ticket by BACS or online with a credit or debit card. Please note we no longer accept payment by cheque.
We know things happen and that sometimes you can’t come to an event. If you are unable to come, you can pass your ticket on to a colleague, but if they are not an AVM member they will need to join AVM. If they don’t, they will be charged at the non-member rate.
If you have to cancel, please let us know in writing.
- Cancellations received more than 20 days before the start of the event, regardless of date booked, will incur a 25% cancellation charge, whether the place has been paid for or not,
- Cancellations received 19–0 days before the start of the event, regardless of date booked, will incur a 100% cancellation charge, whether the place has been paid for or not.
AVM will not accept liability for people unable to attend due to circumstances outside our control, such as travel disruption, work commitments, illness, or other personal commitments.
Where circumstances force AVM to cancel an event, the liability of AVM shall be limited to a refund of any fees paid for tickets to that particular event. AVM is not liable for any consequential loss, such as travel costs you may incur.
Terms and conditions
If you are an AVM member, you need to be logged in to be able to buy tickets at the member rate. We reserve the right to re-issue an invoice at the non-member rate if you are not a member at the time of booking.
L&D organisational package holders are limited to five tickets per organisation for an L&D event, and 10 tickets per organisation for AVM’s annual conference. If you would like to make a bulk order, please get in touch.
Buying for colleagues?
If you are buying tickets for colleagues you can only buy tickets at the member rate for them if they are currently members. We reserve the right to re-issue an invoice at the non-member rate if they are not a member at the time of booking.
You can join AVM online now to qualify for your event discount. As long as your application is submitted, you can purchase tickets for our events at the member rate. You will need to complete your membership payment, otherwise you will be liable for the non-member price for the event.
AVM is committed to providing access to our events for everyone. We aim to hold all our events at venues that are wheelchair accessible. If you have specific requirements to ensure you can fully take part in an event, please let us know when you book, or as soon as you can.
If you require a personal assistant, carer or BSL interpreter to attend the event with you, they are very welcome, and their place will be free. Please email [email protected] to arrange this. If you require us to source a BSL interpreter for you, please let us know at time of booking, or at least one month in advance.
AVM tries to ensure all dietary requirements are provided for, and commits to providing a menu that includes vegetarian and vegan options. Please let us know if you have specific dietary needs at the time of booking, or as soon as possible.
Whilst the programme is correct at time of going to press, AVM reserves the right to change details of an event without notice. Alterations may occasionally be necessary due to circumstances beyond our control.
Views expressed by speakers are their own. AVM disclaims any liability for advice given, or views expressed, by any speaker at the event or in any documentation provided to delegates.
Professional photography and video production will be taking place at the event, and these images may be used on future promotional and training materials for AVM members. Please note that by attending the event, you are giving your consent for your image to be used on any AVM promotional materials or video recordings.
On the day of the event the delegate list (name, job title and organisation only) may be shared with attendees to facilitate networking. If you do not want your details in the list, please let us know at least three weeks in advance of the event. This delegate list should not be used for sales to our delegates, either during or after the event.
