A great volunteer strategy is the launchpad for building a movement around your cause. If you’re thinking of developing your organisation’s first volunteer strategy, or if you’re due a strategy refresh this workshop is for you.
You will learn how different organisations approach volunteer strategy development, learn hints and tips about ensuring your volunteer strategy will succeed and explore with peers new approaches to strategy development in your organisation.
The session will use real life case studies and tips to cover:
- Exploring why you might need a volunteer strategy
- Co-producing the strategy with volunteers and volunteer managers
- The difference between a strategy, plan and tactics
- Understanding the internal and external landscape
- Audit and analysis
- Aligning with your organisation’s cause and goal
- Aligning to volunteer motivations and preferences
- Staffing, budget and ways of working – resourcing the strategy
- Some ideas for implementation
- Evaluating and reviewing your strategy live.
About the speaker
Laura Elson has worked in volunteer involvement for over 20 years and now works as an independent consultant specialising in supporting organisations to build ambitious and cohesive volunteer strategies that build movements around a cause.
Laura has worked in volunteer leadership roles at a number of grassroots organisations, and at Volunteer Centre Leeds, Parkinson’s UK, and England Netball. As a consultant she has helped over 30 organisations with their strategic volunteering including Dogs Trust, Blood Cancer UK, RABI, The Marine Conservation Society, The Churches Conservation Trust, The Solicitors’ Charity, The Peak District National Park Authority and the MS Society.
Laura is an Associate Consultant with NCVO, Consultants for Good and the Association of Chairs. She volunteers as Strategic Lead for Volunteering with Yorkshire Netball, and as a trustee of Bramley Elderly Action and Older Wiser Local Seniors.

What are your payment and cancellation terms?
Payment must be made by the date of the event.
If you require an invoice, please ensure you book your place a minimum of two weeks before the start date of the event. After that we will only accept payment by credit card or PayPal.
Want to pay by credit card but can’t pay now? No problem! You can pay against an invoice by credit card (or PayPal): we will send you a link to do so.
As you follow the online booking process – select the payment option at checkout “Request invoice”. If you need us to add a payment reference or purchase order number to the invoice – just add it in the “Additional information” section when confirming your billing details at checkout.
You’ll receive your invoice by email once we have received your booking. You can pay for your ticket by BACS or online with a credit or debit card. Please note we no longer accept payment by cheque.
We know things happen and that sometimes you can’t come to an event. If you are unable to come, you may be able to pass your ticket on to a colleague, but if they are not an AVM member they will need to join AVM. If they don’t, they will be charged at the non-member rate.
If you have to cancel or want to arrange a swap, please let us know in writing.
- Cancellations received more than 20 days before the start of the event, regardless of date booked, will incur a 25% cancellation charge, whether the place has been paid for or not,
- Cancellations received 19–0 days before the start of the event, regardless of date booked, will incur a 100% cancellation charge, whether the place has been paid for or not.
AVM will not accept liability for people unable to attend due to circumstances outside our control, such as travel disruption, work commitments, poor internet connection, illness, or other personal commitments.
Where circumstances force AVM to cancel an event, the liability of AVM shall be limited to a refund of any fees paid for tickets to that particular event. AVM is not liable for any consequential loss, such as travel costs you may incur.
