  • Do you need to kick start the cultural change within your organisation?
  • Are you keen to engage new types of volunteers to reflect the changing role and image of your organisation?
  • Can we encourage volunteering as a general activity, rather than a specific role within a single organisation?

This Learning and Development day will be looking at innovative programmes to involve and engage a new generation of volunteers. Examining the volunteer journey from assessing the organisations’ needs, recruiting suitable volunteers, training, engaging and supporting volunteers and integrating new recruits into the existing programme.

It will also address the vital role of research in the strategic thinking of volunteer organisations and how to use data effectively in presenting the role of volunteers to stakeholders.

We will also consider ways to encourage organisations to embrace volunteering as a dynamic resource, rather than a “cheap alternative to staff” We will look at bringing senior directors along on the journey of volunteer development and progression.

There will be roundtable discussions and networking sessions to allow all attendees to share their own experiences and an opportunity to take a guided tour of the incredible SS. Great Britain.

Eleanor Moore, Sustainable Volunteering Officer, South West Museum Development Programme (SWMDP)

The SWMDP is funded by Arts Council England to support the development of museums of all sizes across the region. Every South West museum involves volunteers and volunteers are vital to delivering a vibrant and varied museum offer across the region. In this presentation Eleanor will sum up the challenges museums face and highlight how SWMDP’s support helps museums of all sizes to take fresh approaches to volunteering – to benefit both their volunteers and our fantastic heritage.

11.10am – 12.00pm – Meaningful engagement begins with recruitment – Stephen Hill

Stephen Hill, Head of Volunteering, Parkinson’s UK

Effective recruitment preparation isn’t just about looking out to reach new people, it is also about looking in. Parkinson’s local groups now support 30,000 people and they have a UK-wide network of local advisers. As Head of Volunteering, Stephen is responsible for the volunteer component of that support network. Now in the process of a major recruitment campaign, his presentation considers their novel approach to preparing the organisation for new volunteers. By actively involving existing staff and volunteers in the integration and development of incoming volunteers, the aim is to provide an enhanced volunteer experience that will ultimately benefit Parkinson’s, the volunteers, and any other organisation they may volunteer for in the future.

1.15 – 1.50pm – How research feeds into organisational change – Anneka Coleman

Anneka Coleman, Volunteer Development Manager, English Heritage

English Heritage has completed bi-annual surveys of their volunteers since 2010, with each survey providing valuable feedback into the success of the programme and areas to improve and address. This case study outlines how data and insight can lead to tangible change and support a volunteer strategy. It also outlines how with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, research and consultation has proved invaluable in developing a youth focused project: Shout out Loud, which seeks to engage younger audiences with volunteering and heritage and break down barriers to participation.

Brunel’s SS. Great Britain is one of the most important ships in the world and the site is currently being expanded to include the Brunel Experience centre. School and family visits are crucial for almost all heritage sites and involving young volunteers is increasingly seen as hugely beneficial for Family Learning programs. Matilda will be talking about their innovative work with younger volunteers. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit the ship and meet some of their excellent volunteers at the end of the day.

Organisational change doesn’t happen on its own. If you want to transform your volunteer programme you need to make it happen. This presentation will explore the tools available to you and how to make most effective use of them.

Payment and cancellation terms

Payment must be made by the date of the event.

If you require an invoice, please ensure you book your place a minimum of two weeks before the start date of the event. After that we will only accept payment by credit card or PayPal.

Want to pay by credit card but can’t pay now? No problem! You can pay against an invoice by credit card (or PayPal): we will send you a link to do so.

As you follow the online booking process – select the payment option at checkout “Request invoice”. If you need us to add a payment reference or purchase order number to the invoice – just add it in the “Additional information” section when confirming your billing details at checkout.

You’ll receive your invoice by email once we have accepted your booking. You can pay for your ticket by BACS or online with a credit or debit card. Please note we no longer accept payment by cheque.

We know things happen and that sometimes you can’t come to an event. If you are unable to come, you can pass your ticket on to a colleague, but if they are not an AVM member they will need to join AVM. If they don’t, they will be charged at the non-member rate.

If you have to cancel, please let us know in writing.

  • Cancellations received more than 20 days before the start of the event, regardless of date booked, will incur a 25% cancellation charge, whether the place has been paid for or not,
  • Cancellations received 19–0 days before the start of the event, regardless of date booked, will incur a 100% cancellation charge, whether the place has been paid for or not.

AVM will not accept liability for people unable to attend due to circumstances outside our control, such as travel disruption, work commitments, illness, or other personal commitments.

Where circumstances force AVM to cancel an event, the liability of AVM shall be limited to a refund of any fees paid for tickets to that particular event. AVM is not liable for any consequential loss, such as travel costs you may incur.

Terms and conditions

If you are an AVM member, you need to be logged in to be able to buy tickets at the member rate. We reserve the right to re-issue an invoice at the non-member rate if you are not a member at the time of booking.

L&D organisational package holders are limited to five tickets per organisation for an L&D event, and 10 tickets per organisation for AVM’s annual conference. If you would like to make a bulk order, please get in touch.

Buying for colleagues?

If you are buying tickets for colleagues you can only buy tickets at the member rate for them if they are currently members. We reserve the right to re-issue an invoice at the non-member rate if they are not a member at the time of booking.

You can join AVM online now to qualify for your event discount. As long as your application is submitted, you can purchase tickets for our events at the member rate. You will need to complete your membership payment, otherwise you will be liable for the non-member price for the event.


AVM is committed to providing access to our events for everyone. We aim to hold all our events at venues that are wheelchair accessible. If you have specific requirements to ensure you can fully take part in an event, please let us know when you book, or as soon as you can.

If you require a personal assistant, carer or BSL interpreter to attend the event with you, they are very welcome, and their place will be free. Please email [email protected] to arrange this. If you require us to source a BSL interpreter for you, please let us know at time of booking, or at least one month in advance.

AVM tries to ensure all dietary requirements are provided for, and commits to providing a menu that includes vegetarian and vegan options. Please let us know if you have specific dietary needs at the time of booking, or as soon as possible.


Whilst the programme is correct at time of going to press, AVM reserves the right to change details of an event without notice. Alterations may occasionally be necessary due to circumstances beyond our control.

Professional photography and video production will be taking place at the event, and these images may be used on future promotional and training materials for AVM members. Please note that by attending the event, you are giving your consent for your image to be used on any AVM promotional materials or video recordings.

On the day of the event the delegate list (name, job title and organisation only) may be shared with attendees to facilitate networking. If you do not want your details in the list, please let us know at least three weeks in advance of the event. This delegate list should not be used for sales to our delegates, either during or after the event.
