Our 101 sessions are comprehensive introductory sessions for people new to volunteer management or new to specific aspects of the role, or who would like to refresh their knowledge of a topic.

About the speakers

Katie Beeston – Safeguarding Lead, Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland

Katie’s background prior to this role centred around HR, people and business management. Her journey into the third sector began with various voluntary roles before joining the HR team at Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS).

Katie is hugely passionate about the voluntary sector, and the essential role that good governance and robust safeguarding practices play. Having led safeguarding procedural and cultural change across CHSS over the last 3-4 years, Katie is keen to share the importance of understanding both regulatory compliance and best practice, and what we really mean when we say safeguarding is everyone’s business.

Beck Matthews – Safeguarding Advisor, British Heart Foundation

Beck works at the British Heart Foundation (BHF) as a Safeguarding Advisor. She has worked in the third sector for 20 years, supporting and safeguarding people in large and local charities. These roles have led her to work and support children, young people, adults, and families who are affected by a variety of mental health challenges, substance misuse, domestic abuse, sexual violence, stalking, harassment, FGM, so-called ‘Honour Based Abuse’, abuse, neglect, self-neglect, modern slavery, and discrimination.

Beck is passionate and committed to creating a safe, healthy, and inclusive environment and works closely with the British Heart Foundation’s Employee Relations and Volunteering Teams to support managers develop and nurture a culture where positive behaviours are displayed to ensure continuous improvements is embedded, to create a safe place for all.

She has recently become a trustee of a new charity, the PMDD (Pre Menstrual Dysphoric Disorder) Project. The charity has been created to raise awareness of the condition amongst businesses, the education system, and the government, and to provide support to the PMDD community and to fund research to advance understanding and treatment of PMDD. Beck feels very honoured to be given the opportunity to be part of this new charity.
