Volunteering and Sport have the power to change lives, but do all Volunteer Managers Face the Same Issues?

Volunteers in sport make up the highest percentage in the UK (22%), and volunteer management is a focus for many sporting organisations looking to expand the capacity of their sport. With the spotlight on volunteering brought about through the Gamesmakers of the London 2012 Olympic Games, what lessons have been learned about effectively engaging volunteers in sports organisations?

Volunteer Managers at Sports organisations address certain issues that are unique to the sports sector. However, they also face many issues that are universal. What can the sports sector learn from the charity sector about how to manage volunteers well?

This event aims to bring together presenters and delegates from sports and non-sports volunteer organisations, to see how sharing experiences, challenges and successes can be of mutual benefit to all.

Several of our speakers will be sharing their personal experiences of both sports and non-sports volunteering and volunteer management.

As always, there will be plenty of networking opportunities and roundtable discussions and a Panel Debate, allowing all our delegates the chance to express their views and opinions.

Combining the power of Sport with Volunteering

This session will give an introduction to sports and physical activity volunteering; what makes it unique, and where it relates to volunteering across other sectors. Provide an overview of the opportunities for organisations and communities to harness the transformative powers of both volunteering and sport. But also highlight a couple of challenges, and how we might work together to overcome them.

Jenny joined Sport England in February 2017, after spending 13 years working in political and community volunteer mobilisation, to lead on Sport England’s first volunteering strategy, ‘Volunteering in an Active Nation’

Volunteer Management in Sport vs the Charity Sector: it’s all the same anyway, isn’t it?

Kerry and Alex have both made the move from the charity sector to sport to lead volunteering programmes at their organisations, England Athletics and the Lawn Tennis Association. In this talk they reflect on their own experiences of this move, what are the similarities and what are the differences, and how the sectors can learn from each other.

Kerry is the National Volunteer Manager at England Athletics, the national governing body for grassroot athletics and running in England. Prior to her move to sport, Kerry worked in a number of senior volunteer management roles within the charity sector, most recently at Marie Curie and Tenovus Cancer Care.

Alex joined the Lawn Tennis Association as Volunteering Manager in May 2016, overseeing a strategy that engages over 25,000 volunteers throughout tennis. Prior to this role, Alex worked in volunteer management in the charitable sector for a number of years, including Missing People and the MS Society, from an operational to a strategic level

Lindsay and Fiona will be speaking from the academic research perspective, looking at some of the applied research that has been done with sports organisations and its uses for developing future practice. Lindsay and Fiona represent the UK Sports Volunteering Research Network which aims to facilitate the interchange of information, ideas, and practice in the research of sport volunteers; especially between researchers and practitioners.

Fiona is a Lecturer in Sport and Event Management at Glasgow Caledonian University (Scotland, UK). Her research encompasses sports geography, sports development and sports events, and she is currently focussing on volunteers and the voluntary sector in sport.

Lindsay is a Principal lecturer at the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation, Northumbria University, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Her research focuses on sport and leisure volunteering experience, recruitment and retention. This work has included: sports club, facility and event settings, and uniformed youth organisations.

Volunteering in sport: how we recruit, retain and reward our volunteers.

This session will share how to get more people active through volunteering and how best to recruit, retain and reward volunteers using the GIVERS framework. GIVERS transforms data on over 300,000 volunteers into a simple, practical tool to help anyone recruit, retain and reward more volunteers.

Chantel is Director of Marketing, Communications and Member Engagement, at the Sport and Recreation Alliance and she looks after the Join In brand, which was set up after the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, to capitalise on the power of major sporting events to benefit grassroots clubs. Prior to joining the Alliance, she was Head of Communications at Samaritans, a leading mental health and suicide prevention charity, working with over 22,000 volunteers who deliver the charity’s service to nearly 6 million callers a year.

Payment and cancellation terms

Payment must be made by the date of the event.

If you require an invoice, please ensure you book your place a minimum of two weeks before the start date of the event. After that we will only accept payment by credit card or PayPal.

Want to pay by credit card but can’t pay now? No problem! You can pay against an invoice by credit card (or PayPal): we will send you a link to do so.

As you follow the online booking process – select the payment option at checkout “Request invoice”. If you need us to add a payment reference or purchase order number to the invoice – just add it in the “Additional information” section when confirming your billing details at checkout.

You’ll receive your invoice by email once we have accepted your booking. You can pay for your ticket by BACS or online with a credit or debit card. Please note we no longer accept payment by cheque.

We know things happen and that sometimes you can’t come to an event. If you are unable to come, you can pass your ticket on to a colleague, but if they are not an AVM member they will need to join AVM. If they don’t, they will be charged at the non-member rate.

If you have to cancel, please let us know in writing.

  • Cancellations received more than 20 days before the start of the event, regardless of date booked, will incur a 25% cancellation charge, whether the place has been paid for or not,
  • Cancellations received 19–0 days before the start of the event, regardless of date booked, will incur a 100% cancellation charge, whether the place has been paid for or not.

AVM will not accept liability for people unable to attend due to circumstances outside our control, such as travel disruption, work commitments, illness, or other personal commitments.

Where circumstances force AVM to cancel an event, the liability of AVM shall be limited to a refund of any fees paid for tickets to that particular event. AVM is not liable for any consequential loss, such as travel costs you may incur.

Terms and conditions

If you are an AVM member, you need to be logged in to be able to buy tickets at the member rate. We reserve the right to re-issue an invoice at the non-member rate if you are not a member at the time of booking.

L&D organisational package holders are limited to five tickets per organisation for an L&D event, and 10 tickets per organisation for AVM’s annual conference. If you would like to make a bulk order, please get in touch.

Buying for colleagues?

If you are buying tickets for colleagues you can only buy tickets at the member rate for them if they are currently members. We reserve the right to re-issue an invoice at the non-member rate if they are not a member at the time of booking.

You can join AVM online now to qualify for your event discount. As long as your application is submitted, you can purchase tickets for our events at the member rate. You will need to complete your membership payment, otherwise you will be liable for the non-member price for the event.


AVM is committed to providing access to our events for everyone. We aim to hold all our events at venues that are wheelchair accessible. If you have specific requirements to ensure you can fully take part in an event, please let us know when you book, or as soon as you can.

If you require a personal assistant, carer or BSL interpreter to attend the event with you, they are very welcome, and their place will be free. Please email [email protected] to arrange this. If you require us to source a BSL interpreter for you, please let us know at time of booking, or at least one month in advance.

AVM tries to ensure all dietary requirements are provided for, and commits to providing a menu that includes vegetarian and vegan options. Please let us know if you have specific dietary needs at the time of booking, or as soon as possible.


Whilst the programme is correct at time of going to press, AVM reserves the right to change details of an event without notice. Alterations may occasionally be necessary due to circumstances beyond our control.

Views expressed by speakers are their own. AVM disclaims any liability for advice given, or views expressed, by any speaker at the event or in any documentation provided to delegates.

Professional photography and video production will be taking place at the event, and these images may be used on future promotional and training materials for AVM members. Please note that by attending the event, you are giving your consent for your image to be used on any AVM promotional materials or video recordings.

On the day of the event the delegate list (name, job title and organisation only) may be shared with attendees to facilitate networking. If you do not want your details in the list, please let us know at least three weeks in advance of the event. This delegate list should not be used for sales to our delegates, either during or after the event.
